The recent explosion of interest in midcentury modern relics has antiques dealer Lee Cuthbert knocking on wood (Heywood-Wakefield, of course). Her young Decatur store, Victory Vintage, specializes in post–World War II furniture, accessories, artwork and educational aids. Reproductions and retro-flavored paper goods are available, too. While her inventory is similar to that of shops such as City Issue and Twentieth Century Antiques, Cuthbert’s low prices and unusually personal customer service have us snagged. Look for swell discounts on items that haven’t moved for more than 60 days.

For feeling refreshed and revived, we find that the facials and peels at APROPOS SKIN THERAPIES are worth the trip. With a focus on state-of-the-art facials, this is the only location in Georgia where you can blast your dead skin cells and free up those fresh and shiny layers through Plasma-Ablation. For sensitive skin, the extra-gentle Papaya Enzyme Cleanse removes impurities without irritation, and for a delight to your skin and nose, try the Pumpkin Enzyme peel. High in antioxidants, the treatment improves skin texture and tone while reducing redness. The sweetest treat: A neck massage comes with any of the facial treatments.

Perfect for the beginner and novice shooter, and pretty good for experts, SHOWCASE PHOTO AND VIDEO SUPERSTORE has equipment and supplies for both digital and film photographers. Its selection of inks, instruction books, papers and printers push it well above the competition. Showcase’s selection is bolstered by its nostalgic (or is it purist?) persistence to keep real, old-fashioned darkroom chemicals in stock. The staff is surpassingly helpful, friendly even, and the accompanying Showcase School of Photography can help anyone take their skills to the next level.

Crate and Barrel has come a long way since 1962, from a unique mom-and-pop shop in Chicago to a 130-store mega-chain that embodies the word “home” for Generation Y. Because it offers products for every conceivable domestic scenario (churning ice cream, guzzling margaritas, washing the dog) and features a variety of styles (classic, mod, rustic), C&B is ideal for a single-registry wedding. Couples can do the whole shebang online, and the easy-to-shop Web list is especially convenient for out-of-town gift-givers.

On the first Thursday of each month from 7-10 p.m., local designers and artisans converge at Grant Park’s Young Blood Gallery for Kraftwork, a night dedicated to selling the products of local crafters. Indie kids, neighborhood enthusiasts and friends of the artists sip cheap wine and PBRs as they peruse the handmade wares and chat with the creative entrepreneurs. Screen-printed tees, fingerless gloves, fabric pins, deconstructed skirts and crochet hats are just a sample of what is available each month. Look for great prices and don’t be afraid to bargain (and even barter), especially toward the end of the evening when vendors are more likely to give you a deal. less...

For a time, Phipps Plaza was off our browsing radar. It wasn’t so much the divine designer offerings, it was that so little seemed to change. Was there ever a time when Versace and Gucci didn’t inhabit the Saks wing? But when we saw that the uber-hip, ultra-exclusive Barney’s CO-OP was coming to town, we took notice and reconsidered our opinion. Now we browse through the mall as though in a museum, reawakened to the beauty at Jeffrey, eagerly discovering the new world of Jimmy Choo, and dreamily running our fingers over the Chanel at a redesigned Saks. When the stores have sales, we’ve found that the prices are good enough to skip out on crowded Lenox altogether. less...

If you’ve got a Carrie Bradshaw-size designer shoe fetish but a salary more like a grad student’s, we recommend a trip to Saks Fifth Avenue’s Semi-Annual clearance Sale. With names like Jimmy Choo, Chanel, Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Prada lining the racks at up to 60 percent off, you won’t have to worry your pretty little head about where you’ll find the rent money. Their picnic baskets beg to be filled with the crusty bread and artisan cheeses lying just steps away, as does a sizable selection of seasonal dinnerware that keeps our food looking festive. For its second full year under artistic director Jasson Minadakis, ACTOR’S EXPRESS lived up to its rep as Atlanta’s most vital theatrical venue. Bookended by the darkly comic Killer Joe (the season’s most delightfully disturbing play) and the more challenging examination of Southern character, Hazard County, Actor’s Express produced the plays most likely to start arguments — in a good way. Even the shows that didn’t quite click, like The Love Song of J. Robert Oppenheimer, had more ambition and ideas than most other playhouses’ best successes.

While the CD market is fading in the MP3 era, you wouldn’t know it at ELLA GURU, an expansive storefront tucked into a pleasant corner of the Toco Hills shopping center. The store doesn’t hedge its bets by selling vinyl, concert tickets or comic books; it’s all CDs, all the time, with the occasional in-store appearance. Don’t go expecting an edgy atmosphere — or the attitude that goes with it — just one of the larger selections of used and new CDs in town. If you’re selling, Ella Guru pays close to the local top dollar, and its own prices are pretty reasonable, considering that even Best Buy has jacked up costs for new music.

Crowded into a narrow space in the heart of Little Five Points, WAX ‘N’ FACTS is home to thousands of vinyl records, new and used CDs, imports, DVDs, music magazines and posters. This is as close to an old-fashioned record store as you’ll likely ever see because the emphasis is on used, new and collectible records.

It might not sound soothing to get needles shoved into your body, but at ACUPUNCTURE WORKS it is, and you’ll come out feeling balanced. The licensed acupuncturists pinpoint your aches and pains by delicately and professionally inserting needles that help treat conditions like chronic back pain or menstrual cramps. Even if you don’t have a specific pain, the treatment can increase oxygen and blood flow, leaving you energized. And if acupuncture isn’t your idea of a relaxing body treatment, Acupuncture Works also offers plenty of massages to help you mellow out.

The best thing about CHAPTER 11 BOOKSTORES is what they aren’t. Though often located in strip malls, they manage to avoid being big-box stores. With books ranging from the newest Harry Potter to your favorite Charles Dickens novel, they offer a smart, broad selection without being snooty, intellectual havens. They aren’t trying to be cool with cappuccino bars and mood lighting, and yet they are cool in our book. Seriously — these people sell really cheap books. Yes, they’ve got the usual Tommy, Ralph and Nautica out the wazoo, but what sets FILENE’S BASEMENT apart from the rest of the discount pack is the unpredictable but frequent infusion of hipper and more rare offerings: Diesel jeans, Missoni dress shirts, Valentino suits, French Connection T-shirts, Zegna ties, Ben Sherman slacks, even Prada shoes. It’s down to one store now in Atlanta, but give LOEHMANN’S credit for updating its selection to include some of the hottest brands for the under-30 set — Theory, Moschino, Marc Jacobs, Versace, D&G — in addition to the usual work clothes for career gals. It’s livened up its jeans section with Diesel, Seven, Mavi and other of-the-moment brands and, for those with a little extra spending money, the chain now carries Kate Spade bags and shoes. For those who didn’t know, SATELLITE RECORDS used to be an actual satellite, one of an East Coast chain of dance music vinyl stores. Now, however, Satellite is locally owned and operated, and doubly proud to be the shop around which both bleary-eyed bedroom DJs and transient transatlantic superstar jocks can be found. Over the last year, we’ve been pleased to find that the beautiful buildings lining EDGEWOOD AVENUE are being put to increasingly good use, with retailers popping up at the corner of Edgewood and Randolph. The crazy thing about the Lakewood Antiques Market is that, with its 1,500 dealer booths, you really do need the full three days that it’s open every month to see all that’s there. We’ve found beautiful antique buttons, gently used train cases, old apothecary bottles and enough vintage postcards and posters to decorate a whole house.
